Balboa Beach Party

REVIEWS

At the end of each school year, the GEO club likes to go out with a festive end by having a beach party near the scenic Balboa pier and carnival. Anyone who is an active member and turns in his or her permission slip is allowed to go.  Many students bring their parents, or even their whole families to enjoy a day of fun in the traditional beach town.  If you're the type of person who likes the water than make sure you bring your swimsuit and boogie board, but  beware, the water and weather usually aren't as warm as you'd like in May. Interestingly enough, if you don't like the water, there's still plenty for you to do.

Near the GEO bonfire pit lies a large open area of grass where lots of people go to enjoy throwing around a Frisbee, playing a game of soccer, baseball, or football. Many people just like to go and lay on the grass, take in the sun, and enjoy the music bumping out of all the seaside homes.  Still not enough activity?  Well perhaps you're the type of person who enjoys a good walk. Then take your pick of exploring the old beach shops that are just a block east of  the GEO bonfire pit.  In the small town you'll find plenty of interesting shops and restaurants to go into.  If you walk far enough in through the town you'll find the Balboa beach carnival.  It's a small and very traditional carnival with a small Ferris wheel that's a must-ride on clear and cool nights along the Balboa peninsula.

The beautiful and picturesque sunset that occurs each evening is also a must see.  Be sure to try and make it to the pier in time to see the ocean melt the big orange sun.  While you're at the pier, particularly if you're hungry, check out the most classic restaurant in the area, Ruby's.  The restaurant is a 50's style diner and seating is limited.

However, don't be turned off by the small wait because eating there is like taking a bite out of Americana.  After the sun goes down the GEO officers, or volunteer GEO parents, make sure that the bonfire is going  strong. At this time of night, it gets a little chilly, so be sure to bring a jacket or sweater.  People usually like to bring out their marshmallows and crackers to make the classic and yummy bonfire treat, smores.  By about ten-thirty at night, get ready to pack up and leave because the beach closes at eleven.

The night at the beach may be over, but there's still one last thing you can do to end the night on a high note.  Instead of taking the long way around the peninsula in order to get to the freeway, take the ferry.  It doesn't cost much,  and they charge per type of vehicle as well as how many  passengers.  If you do take it, be sure to get out of you car and say goodbye to the cool and beautiful night while you're gliding on the water.
